ZA Tech Show: Episode 25

This week we have a studio audience (even). And we discuss:

  • The massive changes taking place in South African television.
  • When and if we’ll ever see DVB-H in South Africa.
  • Initial impressions on the Nokia N96, now that we have one to review - and how much we love the E71.
  • Mobile phones on aeroplanes and why we can’t use them. Really.
  • Acer finally letting us know when we’ll see the Aspire One locally, with pricing.
  • Where netbooks belong and what they should cost.
  • WiMAX and Intel’s announced support for the technology.
  • Intel Centrino 2 and how it will change mobile computers.
  • USB 3.0 and Firewire 3200.
  • Cancelling cell contracts in South Africa.
  • Vodacom versus ICASA.

And Brett talks about his light saber. It makes him happy.

    Yea, very cool notebook.

We are using the M1330’s here at the office. Got them when they were on special from the USA. Was under $900 for 3GB RAM, 7200RPM drive etc. Good value for money.

Why do I look so sad? Maybe it’s because Jon had just kakked on me for whispering in the background which interfered with his ability to think

You know, on the subject of cancelling contracts, with 4 months left on my God-forsaken MTN contract (with MTN SP) I’m looking forward to the day when I can kick MTN to the curb for being the worst network provider in SA. I called, for interest sake, to see how much it would cost to cancel my contract 4 months early. It was well over R4,500 because I had to pay them for my handset, in addition to the balance of the subs and an early cancellation fee. In the mean time, I’ve turned off my MTN phone, taken out a new contract with Virgin Mobile (I use Vodacom HSDPA for my data BTW) and diverted all my calls to my new number as I wait out the last months of the MTN contract. It’s costing me just under R1,500 in total to do it this way as opposed to paying the R4,500 to cancel early. Bunch of bloody schaaisters…
